Turkish ports halt operations after earthquake

The earthquake struck southeast Turkey and parts of the Mediterranean coast on Feb. 6, disrupting port operations and collapsing a number of containers at the port of Iskenderun, according to Lloyd's List, an international shipping outlet. A container collapsed and caused a severe fire in Iskenderun, Turkey's largest port in the southern province of Hatay on the eastern Mediterranean coast, after Monday's massive earthquake, Reuters witnesses and video showed, sending plumes of black smoke high into the air.

At around 17:00 local time on February 6, a container in the storage yard of Iskenderun Port in Turkey overturned and caught fire due to unknown reasons. Firefighters from the port administration and municipal authorities have rushed to the scene to put out the fire. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

Iskenderun is a Turkish Mediterranean port located in Hatay province, Turkey, which was hit by the earthquake. Offshore infrastructure was also damaged after a 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck southern Turkey. As a result of the quake, parts of the port terminal were damaged and photos showed a large number of collapsed containers.

In addition, operations at Turkey's Ceyhan oil terminal have been halted. Turkey has halted crude oil shipments to its Ceyhan export terminal on the Mediterranean coast as a precaution following a devastating earthquake, according to an official familiar with the matter. State pipeline operator Botas made the decision on Monday morning after an earthquake struck eastern Turkey. The official said no leaks were found in the pipeline that supplies oil to the port.Turkey's energy and Natural Resources Minister Fatih Tonmes says the powerful earthquake has caused severe damage to the country's energy infrastructure. Infrastructure in Kahramanmaras province has been particularly affected.

Turkey's health minister says 1,651 people have been killed and 11,119 injured in the country's earthquake, which destroyed 5,606 buildings. The death toll from a powerful earthquake in Turkey has risen to 538 in Syria, with 1,353 injured, according to the latest news from Syria's Health Ministry. The data comes mainly from Latakia, Aleppo, Hama and Tartus provinces.
